Good Housekeeping's lab air-fried wings in nine combos and named a favorite. But we found no controlled test against basket air fryers. If crispy food is your main goal, a basket air fryer next to your microwave may suit you better.
The size on the box isn't the size on your counter
The cubic feet tell you how much room is inside, not how much counter it takes up. Measure your space first, then compare the outside size.
Some look like combos but aren't
A toaster oven can't microwave, and most Ninja Crispi models are glass air fryers with no microwave at all. Check the model number before you buy. Only the Ninja Crispi Microwave MW101 is a microwave.
Air frying makes more mess
Grease is new for a microwave. Good Housekeeping says air frying can make more mess, and suggests a smooth inside with fewer corners to wipe.

Is there a microwave with an air fryer built in?
Yes. A combo microwaves and air-fries in one box. Toshiba, Panasonic, Sharp, Breville, GE and Ninja all sell countertop ones.
Are microwave air fryer combos any good?
They can be, with limits. Good Housekeeping's lab tried wings in nine combos and named a favorite, but we found no controlled test against basket air fryers. If crispy food is your main goal, a basket air fryer next to a microwave may suit you better.
Is the Ninja Crispi a microwave?
Only one of them is: the MW101 Crispi Microwave. The FN101 and AS101 are glass air fryers with no microwave inside. Check the model number before you buy.
How much space does a combo need around it?
It depends on the model. The Panasonic NN-CD87 manual asks for 6 in on top, 4 in behind, 2 in on each side and 3 in from the counter edge. Check your manual before you buy, and never block the vents.
Is a combo the same as a convection microwave?
Not always. A convection microwave has a heating element and a fan, but it may have no air fry setting. If air frying is the point, look for that setting by name.
