Question & answer
Can You Microwave and Air Fry at the Same Time?
Not as two separate jobs. A combo has one oven space and runs one program, so soup can't microwave while fries air-fry beside it. Some models do mix microwaves with oven heat in a set mode. Ninja's FusionCrisp microwaves first, then air-fries. In the documents we read, air fry and microwave run in stages.

The short answer
Not as two separate jobs, because one oven space runs one program. Some models blend microwaves with convection or broil heat in a set mode, like Panasonic's Combo or GE's Combi. Ninja's FusionCrisp and Sharp's multi-stage cooking run one step after another. None of the documents we read describes air fry and microwave running together.

A microwave air fryer combo is one appliance that can both microwave and air-fry in one oven space. It has the part that microwaves, plus a heater and fan that blow hot air over the food. One space is the catch: one door, one timer, one program. That is the trade-off behind whether a combo is worth it.
What do the combo modes do?
| Model | Mode | How it runs |
|---|---|---|
| Panasonic NN-CD87 (sister of the HomeChef) | Combo 1 and 2 | Microwave with broil (casseroles) or with convection bake (frozen foods) |
| GE GCST10A1 | Combi C-1 and C-2 | The oven heats to about 325°F. The fan or broil element cycles while microwaves cook |
| Breville BMO870 | Fast Combi | Switches between microwave, convection oven and grill |
| Ninja Crispi MW101 | FusionCrisp | Microwave first, then air fry automatically |
| Sharp SMC0985KS | Multi-stage cooking | Up to three functions in one go, like defrost, cook and crisp |
Panasonic also has a 3-stage setting that chains modes with a beep between each.
Is a blended mode the same as air frying?
No. Panasonic, GE and Breville pair microwaves with convection, broil or grill heat. None of those documents lists a mode that runs air fry and microwave together. Ninja and Sharp do it in stages.
So don't expect a combo mode to be air fry with a speed boost. We found no published comparison of crisping between these modes, and no controlled test against a basket fryer. See combo versus basket air fryer. Ninja's "frozen to crispy" line compares air fry watts (1700 W against 1500 W on the FN101). It is not a cooking test. For hot air modes, see convection versus air fry.
Do the accessories change with the mode?
Yes, and a blended mode can catch you out.
- Panasonic (sister model). No plastic microwave containers in Combo. Use only the supplied metal accessories. Foil is for shielding only, in Combo and microwave. Never cover racks with foil.
- GE. Use the supplied racks for Combi, and no other metal. One rack at a time.
- Ninja (UK guide). The crisper plate is microwave safe only inside the glass dish. Check the US guide for your unit.
See how to use a combo and the glossary.
How do I plan dinner with one oven space?
- Start with the longest job. Panasonic's sister-model chart gives 20 to 30 minutes for 8 to 16 oz of thin frozen fries. Then reheat the quick side in microwave mode.
- Swap the accessories between jobs. On the Panasonic, the rack, tray and basket come out before microwaving. Use oven mitts, because the manual warns they get very hot.
- Use a mode that fits the whole dish. A casserole in Combo 1 is one job with no swap. Stick to the foods your manual lists.
If you often need two things hot at once, two appliances are the honest answer. Check the power first. 1700 W at 120 V is about 14.2 A (computed), near the limit of a 15 A circuit. See circuits and amps.
Before you buy, find the combo mode in the manual and see which foods it lists. If they aren't what you cook on a weeknight, don't count it as a reason to buy.
Is there one button for both steps?
The MW101 is built around that idea. It is about 14.1 in tall as listed, so read the Ninja Crispi Microwave page first. Other kitchens: see the best combos.
Ninja
Ninja Crispi MW101
The only Ninja Crispi that microwaves, with a flatbed and a glass basket.
Why it fits here: FusionCrisp runs a microwave stage and then an air fry stage on one setting, so you skip the swap in the middle.
Best for: anyone who wants a flatbed instead of a turntable and has room above it

Quick questions
Can you cook two different dishes at once in a microwave air fryer?
Not with two different modes. The whole oven space runs one program. For two dishes, run them one after another. If you often need both at once, a separate microwave and basket air fryer may suit you better, if your circuit can carry both.
Does a combo use microwaves while it air-fries?
Not in the air fry modes we read about. GE's manual describes air fry as heating elements warming the air and a fan moving it around the food. Microwaves join in only in its separate Combi modes. Check the mode list in your manual.
What is the difference between combo mode and air fry mode?
Air fry uses a heater and fan. Combo or combi mode adds microwave energy, usually to convection or broil heat. Panasonic's sister-model manual uses Combo 1 for casseroles and Combo 2 for frozen foods. Follow your manual's chart for each food.
Is FusionCrisp microwaving and air frying at the same time?
No. Ninja's release says it starts with microwave cooking and then finishes automatically with air frying. It is one button, but the two stages run in turn. Check the US guide for your unit.
