Built-In Microwave With Air Fryer: Cabinet Openings, Trim Kits and What to Check

Don't put a countertop combo in a cabinet unless its company allows it. Breville forbids it, and GE requires its own accessory. For a true built-in microwave with air fry, there are two models on Amazon, and we only have listing data for them. Measure the opening and let a dealer quote the job.

The short version

Do not put a countertop combo in a cabinet unless its maker allows it. Breville says its Combi Wave must not go in a cabinet, and GE requires an installation accessory. For a true built-in, compare the KoolMore 30 in and AAOBOSI 24 in, but confirm the cutout first, since we have listing data only. Many buyers go to a dealer, since Good Housekeeping says built-ins need professional installation.

Built-in air fry microwaves are a small, thinly documented corner of the market. A dealer who can look at your cabinet may serve you better than any link here. Our where to buy guide compares the stores.

The sizes for the first two are seller data, not a cutout drawing. Don't cut a cabinet from a listing.

  • KoolMore KM-CWO30-SS. The KoolMore* is sold as a 30 in built-in with microwave, convection and air fry. The seller says 1.6 cu ft, 1000 W, a 14.17 in turntable and a body of 29.9 × 25.4 × 19.1 in. The title names a NEMA 5-20P plug, a 20 amp type, so check that your outlet accepts it. KoolMore's own page refused our requests. Search excerpts mention a cutout of 28.5 in wide, 24.19 in deep and 19.19 in high. Treat those as leads and get the current drawing from KoolMore or a dealer.
  • AAOBOSI 24 in. The AAOBOSI* is sold as a built-in with 1.6 cu ft, a drop-down door, convection and air fry. The listing has loose ends: the title says 1000 W while a detail row says 1700 W, and the size row says 22 × 22 × 18 in. We found no manual or cutout drawing, so ask the seller for both before you order.
  • Panasonic HomeChef. The listing* names the NN-CV87QS. Panasonic's finder lists a trim kit for the sister model NN-CD87KS, but showed none under the NN-CV87QS. It is a good countertop combo, but not a safe built-in plan unless Panasonic confirms a kit. See our Panasonic HomeChef page.

What is a trim kit?

A trim kit is a company-made frame that closes the gap between a microwave and the cabinet opening. It is made for specific models. Panasonic's NN-CD87KS example:

What to checkExample
Kit for your exact modelNN-TK81KCS
Cabinet opening23 5/8 in wide, 15 9/16 in high, 21 in deep
Where to buyPanasonic authorized dealer or parts retailer
WarrantyNN-CD87 manual: a non-Panasonic kit voids the warranty

The manual has Canadian references, so confirm the warranty wording for the US. Never build your own frame around a countertop model. Panasonic warns that blocked vents can make an oven overheat.

Here is what the companies say about cabinets:

  • Breville BMO870: must not be placed in a cabinet.
  • GE GCST10A1: not intended to be built in without a GE Appliances installation accessory. We found none named for this model.
  • Ninja MW101: not to be wall mounted or installed inside a cabinet (UK guide).
  • Panasonic NN-CD87: only the proper Panasonic trim kit.

For other models, assume no until a manual says yes.

What should I check before I buy?

  • Opening. Measure width, height and depth, and compare with the company's cutout drawing.
  • Venting. Leave the air paths the drawing shows.
  • Power. Check the plug type and amps, and whether the outlet is reachable behind the unit. Ask a qualified electrician about any change. Our page on circuits and amps has the background.
  • Height. The NKBA suggests the bottom of a microwave sit 3 in below the main user's shoulder and no more than 54 in above the floor. Below the counter, at least 15 in off the floor.
  • Landing space. The NKBA recommends at least 15 in above, below or next to the handle side. Hot pans need somewhere to go.
  • Who installs it. Good Housekeeping says built-ins require professional installation. Get a quote first.

Mistakes to avoid: boxing in a countertop combo, buying the kit for a similar model number (the NN-CD87KS and NN-CV87QS are treated differently), and cutting from a listing. We found no controlled comparison of any combo with a basket fryer.

Which combo is yours?

Question 1

Where will it go?

This decides how you buy.

Next step: measure the opening, get the cutout drawing, and let a dealer quote the job. If a counter spot would work, see the best combos. Also see our size guide, clearance guide and over-the-range versus countertop.

Quick questions

Can I put a countertop microwave air fryer in a cabinet?

Only if the company allows it. Breville's BMO870 book says it must not be placed in a cabinet. GE's GCST10A1 manual says it is not intended to be built in without a GE Appliances installation accessory. The UK edition of Ninja's MW101 guide also rules out installing it inside a cabinet. Check your exact model.

Is there a trim kit for the Panasonic HomeChef?

It depends on the model number. Panasonic's US trim kit finder lists the NN-TK81KCS for the NN-CD87KS. Under the NN-CV87QS, the model on the Amazon listing we link, it showed no kit when we read it. Ask Panasonic or a dealer before you plan a cabinet spot around it.

What size is the cabinet opening for a 24 inch built-in microwave?

It depends on the model, so use the company's drawing. Panasonic's finder gives an opening of 23 5/8 in wide, 15 9/16 in high and 21 in deep for the NN-CD87KS with its 24 in kit. For the AAOBOSI 24 in we found no cutout drawing, so ask the seller to confirm in writing before you cut anything.

Are built-in microwaves with air fry more expensive?

Generally, yes. Good Housekeeping says built-ins require professional installation and are generally more expensive. The two models here sit in our premium price class. Also plan for any trim kit, cabinet work, and an electrician if your outlet doesn't match.

Can an over-the-range microwave be used as a built-in?

No. GE says its over-the-range models can't be used on a counter or shelf, and shouldn't go in a closed cabinet or a cut-out space where the bottom is covered. If the spot is above your stove, an over-the-range model is the right type.
