Over-the-Range Microwave With Air Fryer: Fit, Venting and Where to Buy

Yes, over-the-range microwaves with air fry exist, and they replace the hood above your stove. Buy one if you are swapping an existing unit and can get it installed. Skip it if you only want to try air frying. Many people buy these from Home Depot, Lowe's or a local dealer. We make no single pick here.

The short version

An over-the-range microwave with air fry replaces your range hood and is about 30 in wide. Check the opening, the height above the cooktop, your venting and a dedicated circuit first. Many buyers go to Home Depot, Lowe's or a local dealer. For the Amazon models here we mostly have listing data, so they are options, not recommendations.

What is on this page

This appliance has to be mounted, vented and wired. So a store that can arrange installation may suit you better than any link here.

Which way should I go?

Pick your situation

If your stove spot has a plain hood, or none, it may need more work than a straight swap. That is where a dealer or a qualified installer helps.

What are the Amazon options?

All four are true microwaves with air fry, as listed. For most we only have the Amazon listing, so treat all four as options to check. Some returned no price when we looked, so availability is unclear.

  • BLACK+DECKER EC942K6CE-SS. The BLACK+DECKER* is listed at 1.5 cu ft and 900 W, and it is the shallowest here at 13.9 in deep. Less room inside is the trade-off.
  • GE Profile PVM9179SRSS. The GE Profile* is 1.7 cu ft with air fry as listed. GE says it is no longer made, so ask about condition and warranty. We don't suggest it over the other three.
  • LG MHEC1737F. The LG* has 1.7 cu ft, convection and air fry, with a 950 W microwave and a 300 CFM vent, per LG's 2022 sheet.
  • Frigidaire Professional. The Frigidaire* is the largest at 1.9 cu ft. It is also the tallest, which leaves the least space above your cooktop.

Good Housekeeping's April 2026 roundup names a KitchenAid over-the-range convection model as its pick, and says this type usually needs professional installation. We have no Amazon listing for it, so ask a dealer.

What should I check before I buy?

  • The opening. An LG installation manual asks for an opening at least 30 in wide. The models above are 29 7/8 to 30 in, so there is almost no room to spare. Measure at several heights.
  • Height above the stove. GE gives 66 in from the floor to the cabinet above, or 30 in from the cooktop. With a 16.5 in unit, that leaves about 13.5 in above your burners. Picture your biggest pot. For gas, GE says these units are not recommended above a range with a combined burner rating over 65,000 BTU.
  • Reach. A hot basket comes out above the stove. The NKBA suggests the bottom of a microwave sit no more than 54 in above the floor. With GE's 66 in and a 16.5 in unit, it would sit about 49.5 in up. If children use it, picture lifting a hot tray from there.
  • Venting. It is also your range hood. The LG manual lists three ways to vent: through the roof, through the wall, or back into the room with filters. Never vent into a wall, an attic or an unused area. Moving a duct is a job for a professional.
  • Power. GE says these should always be on a dedicated circuit: 120 V, grounded, on a 15 or 20 amp breaker. If the outlet isn't there, a qualified electrician needs to add it.
  • The wall. The LG manual says it takes two people to install. The upper cabinet and rear wall must hold 150 lb plus anything stored in them. It recommends a qualified installer.

Mistakes to avoid: putting a countertop combo up there, measuring only the width, and forgetting the outlet (in the LG manual it sits inside the upper cabinet). We found no controlled test of any combo against a basket fryer. Combo versus basket air fryer has what is known.

Where should I go next?

Our comparison of the four listings sets the figures side by side, and the installation guide covers the wall, vent and circuit. Weighing formats? See over-the-range versus countertop.

Which combo is yours?

Question 1

Where will it go?

This decides how you buy.

If you only want air frying and your hood works, a countertop combo or a separate basket fryer is often easier. Next step: measure the opening, check your venting and circuit, then compare with a dealer who will install it. The best combos page is the next stop for a counter.

Quick questions

Is there an over-the-range microwave with an air fryer?

Yes. GE Profile, LG, Frigidaire, Whirlpool, KitchenAid and BLACK+DECKER all sell them. They combine a microwave, a range hood and an air fry mode above the stove. Many are sold mainly through appliance retailers and dealers.

Can I put a countertop microwave air fryer above my stove?

Not unless its manual allows it, and the one we read does not. Breville's Combi Wave manual says not to install it over a range cooktop or other heat source, and warns that doing so can damage the oven and void the warranty. For that spot, you need a model made for it.

How high does an over-the-range microwave go?

GE's support page gives 66 in from the floor to the bottom of the cabinet above the microwave, which is 30 in from the cooktop to that cabinet. Other brands can differ, so follow the installation instructions for your model.

Does an over-the-range microwave need a dedicated circuit?

GE says its over-the-range models should always be on a dedicated circuit: 120 V, grounded, with a three-prong outlet, on a 15 or 20 amp breaker or time-delay fuse. An LG installation manual asks for much the same. If you don't have this, have a qualified electrician install it.

Should I buy an over-the-range microwave on Amazon or from a dealer?

For many people a dealer or big-box store is the better route. You can ask about delivery and installation and check the model against your opening first. Amazon can make sense if you are replacing a unit yourself and have confirmed the listing.
