Air Fryer vs Microwave: Which Does What Better, and When a Combo Makes Sense
Pick by what you cook most, or get one appliance that does both. An air fryer blows hot air over food, so the surface browns and crisps. A microwave heats the water in food quickly, so it wins on soup, drinks and defrosting but leaves food soft.

The short version
Pick by the job. A microwave is the quicker choice for reheating, soup, liquids and defrosting. An air fryer is better for fries, wings and anything you want crisp, though it can take a bit longer. An air fryer cannot do everything a microwave does. If you have room for only one appliance, a microwave air fryer combo does both, one job at a time.

Neither is better overall. If you mostly reheat, defrost and warm liquids, you want a microwave. If you mostly cook fries, wings and frozen snacks, you want an air fryer. If you want both and have one spot on the counter, that is the case for a combo.
How do they compare?
| Point | Microwave | Air fryer |
|---|---|---|
| How it heats | Microwaves make water molecules in food vibrate (FDA) | Hot air from a heater and fan moves over the food |
| Good at | Reheating, liquids, defrosting, steaming | Crisp surfaces, fries, wings, breaded food |
| Weak at | Crisping and browning | Soup, liquids, defrosting |
| Speed | Quickest for reheating, per Breville | Can take a bit longer, per Whirlpool |
| Texture | Soft, and a soft base on pizza and pastry (Panasonic manual) | Crisp, golden surface |
| Metal | Generally not, per the FDA | Follow the brand's instructions |
| Size | Set by the inside, in cubic feet | Set by the basket, in quarts |
An air fryer works like a small convection oven. The heater gets hot, the fan moves the air, and moisture leaves the surface, which lets it crisp. In a microwave, food absorbs the microwaves and the water in it produces heat. That is why the FDA says foods high in water cook more quickly.
Which is faster?
We found no controlled comparison across foods. Breville calls the microwave the quickest choice for reheating leftovers, drinks and packaged meals. Whirlpool says air fryers can take a bit longer but deliver a crisp surface. Ninja's "up to 60% faster" for its Crispi Microwave is measured against a conventional oven, not against an air fryer or a plain microwave.
Which should I use for what?
| Food | Reach for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Soup, drinks, sauces | Microwave | High water content, per Whirlpool |
| Frozen leftovers, packaged meals | Microwave | Breville's advice for frozen food |
| Steamed vegetables and grains | Microwave | Breville's advice for steaming |
| Pizza, pastry | Air fryer | Panasonic notes a soft base by microwave alone |
| Fries, wings, breaded food | Air fryer | Breville's advice for crisp food |
| Steak, burgers, ribs | Either | We found no published comparison |
For any leftover, temperature matters more than the appliance. Panasonic's manual lists 165°F for leftovers, so use a food thermometer on thick portions.
What about electricity?
We found no controlled measurement. You can work out an upper limit yourself: input watts × hours = kWh. Five minutes at the 1,110 W microwave input in Panasonic's NN-CD87 manual is about 0.09 kWh. Fifteen minutes at the 1500 W Ninja states for its FN101 air fryer is at most 0.375 kWh. Those times are ours, for the arithmetic, not measured. See our wattage guide and electricity use by mode.
Is there a radiation issue?
A plain air fryer produces no microwaves. A microwave oven does, and the FDA's standard limits leakage over its lifetime to 5 mW per square centimeter at about 2 in from the surface. The FDA adds that the energy becomes heat in the food and doesn't make it radioactive. Keep the door and seals in good condition. We make no claims about which method is healthier; see whether an air fryer is healthier.

Quick questions
Is an air fryer the same as a microwave?
No. An air fryer is a small convection oven: a heating element and a fan move hot air around the food. A microwave sends microwaves into the food, where they make water molecules vibrate and produce heat. Only a combo has both in one box.
Does an air fryer use microwaves?
No. A plain air fryer produces no microwaves and cannot run a microwave cycle. That includes glass air fryers such as the Ninja Crispi FN101, whose glass is microwave-safe but which cannot microwave anything itself.
Which is better for reheating, an air fryer or a microwave?
It depends on the food. Soup, drinks and plain leftovers suit a microwave, which Breville describes as the quickest way to reheat. Pizza, fries, wings and breaded food suit an air fryer. Panasonic's manual says pizza and pastry get a soft base by microwave alone.
Does an air fryer use less electricity than a microwave?
We found no controlled comparison, and it depends on watts and minutes. A short microwave run uses little energy, while a longer air fry cycle at a higher wattage can use more. Multiply the input watts by the hours to get an upper limit in kWh for your own model.
Is an air fryer safer than a microwave because of radiation?
An air fryer produces no microwaves, but that doesn't make a microwave unsafe in normal use. The FDA says a federal standard limits leakage over an oven's lifetime to 5 mW per square centimeter at about 2 in from the surface, and that microwave energy doesn't make food radioactive. Don't run a damaged oven.
