Countertop Microwave Clearance: How Much Space a Combo Needs
There is no single rule for countertop microwave clearance, the space a combo needs around it. The Panasonic NN-CD87 manual asks for 6 in on top, 4 in behind, 2 in on each side and 3 in from the counter edge. Other manuals say other things, so use the manual for your exact model.

The short version
Check the manual for your exact model, because the numbers differ by inches. Panasonic's NN-CD87 manual says 6 in on top, 4 in behind, 2 in on each side and 3 in from the counter edge. The UK edition of Ninja's MW101 guide says 11.81 in above and 5.9 in at the sides. Leaving 3 inches all around is not a reliable rule.

Why does a combo need more air?
A combo has heaters as well as the part that does the microwaving. Panasonic's manual warns that the outer surfaces, including the air vents on the cabinet and the door, get hot during air fry, convection, combo and broil. The UK edition of Ninja's guide even has a question about a cabinet above the microwave peeling, warping or changing color. So air around the box is not a nice extra. Blocked vents can make an oven overheat, says Panasonic's manual.
What do the manuals say, model by model?
We list figures only as firmly as we could read them.
| Model | Top | Back | Sides | How sure we are |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Panasonic HomeChef (NN-CV87QS)* | 6 in | 4 in | 2 in each | Read in the sister model's NN-CD87 manual, not confirmed for this listing |
| Ninja Crispi MW101* | 11.81 in | 5.9 in, stated as around the oven | 5.9 in | UK edition only; US guide not read |
| Toshiba ML2-EC10SA* | About 3 in | About 3 in | About 3 in | Third-party summary only, unconfirmed |
| Sharp SMC0985KS* | No data | No data | No data | Product sheet gives none |
| Breville Combi Wave* | 12 in | 8 in, stated as from adjacent walls | 8 in, stated as from adjacent walls | Read in Breville's current BMO870 book; an older retailer copy says 8 in on top. See our Breville page |
| GE 4-in-1 (GCST10A1WBB)* | 3 in | 1 in | 3 in each | Recommended in GE's GCST10A1 manual; older JES1109RRSS figures don't carry over |
| Vissani EC042A2KJ | 12 in | 3 in, stated as from adjacent walls | 3 in, stated as from adjacent walls; one side must be open | Read in Vissani's use and care guide, which also sets a 3 ft minimum installation height |
| BLACK+DECKER ES9P032NA* | No data | No data | No data | Listing only |
The Panasonic manual adds a few rules. Keep the front of the door at least 3 in from the counter edge, to avoid tipping. Use a flat, stable surface more than 36 in above the floor. If one side sits flush to a wall, the other side or the top must not be blocked. Keep it away from a range or a dishwasher. The copy we read has Canadian references in its trim-kit section, so check your own printed manual too.
Will it fit under my cabinet?
A gap of 18 in between counter and wall cabinet is common, though we only found that figure in secondary sources. Measure yours. Our page on what fits under cabinets covers more models. Then add the body height and the top space from the manual.
| Model | Body height | Top space | Total | Against 18 in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toshiba ML2-EC10SA | 11.8 in | About 3 in, unconfirmed | 14.8 in (computed) | Under |
| Panasonic NN-CD87 | 13.5 in | 6 in | 19.5 in (computed) | Over, so read the manual |
| Ninja MW101, UK guide | About 14.1 in as listed | 11.81 in | 25.9 in (computed) | Over, so read the US guide |
Going over doesn't automatically rule a model out. Panasonic's manual allows one side flush to a wall if the other side or the top is free. So check your manual and never block the vents.
How do I measure my spot?
Measure the height
Go from the counter to the underside of the wall cabinet, not to the door trim. Do it where the combo will really sit.Measure the depth
Go from the wall to the counter edge. Subtract any back space your manual asks for, and any distance it wants from the edge.Measure the width
Measure between the wall, the fridge or the next appliance, then subtract the side space from your manual.Open the door in your mind
Check where the door swings and whether it hits a wall or a handle. Lowe's lists an older GE 1.0 cu ft model at 31.8 in deep with the door open, seen in a search excerpt. That is well past a 24 in counter, which is normal, but plan for it.Plan a landing spot
The NKBA kitchen guidelines recommend at least 15 in of landing area above, below or next to the handle side, so a hot dish has somewhere to go.Find the outlet
Check the plug reaches a grounded outlet and read what your manual says about the circuit.
Then try your numbers. The checker compares stated outside sizes, and adds the space around the unit only where a manual we read gives it.
Enter your space and we’ll show which models fit. We use the sizes each brand publishes. It also needs some air around it, so check the manual too.
Many kitchens have about 18 in here, but measure yours to be sure.
Enter all three measurements and the list appears here.
What about height and power?
The NKBA guidelines recommend placing the bottom of a microwave 3 in below the main user's shoulder, and no more than 54 in above the floor. For most people that favors the counter over a high shelf, especially with hot, greasy food inside.
Panasonic's NN-CD87 manual asks for its own circuit with a 15 A or 20 A, 120 V grounded outlet. Sharp's sheet lists 120 V and 20 A for the SMC0985KS. And 1700 W at 120 V is about 14.2 A (computed), close to the limit of a 15 A circuit. We give no electrical advice beyond the manuals, so ask an electrician if your outlet or circuit is unclear. Our page on circuits and amps has the background.
Which combo suits a tight gap?
Lower bodies leave more room. For most kitchens under cabinets, start with the Toshiba below. Our countertop combos page lines up the alternatives. Very short on counter? See small kitchen combos. The size guide explains how outside size relates to cubic feet.
Toshiba
Toshiba ML2-EC10SA
A 1.0 cu ft combo that is low enough for most counters under cabinets.
Why it fits here: At 11.8 in tall per Toshiba, it leaves the most room under a common gap among our 1.0 cu ft picks. Still check the printed manual for its clearance.

Quick questions
How much space does a microwave need around it?
It depends on the model. The Panasonic NN-CD87 manual asks for 6 in on top, 4 in behind and 2 in on each side, plus 3 in from the door to the counter edge. The UK edition of Ninja's MW101 guide asks for more above the unit. Use your own model's manual, and never block the vents.
Can a combo go under a cabinet?
Often, but do the sum first: body height plus the top space in the manual. A low Toshiba ML2-EC10SA at 11.8 in leaves about 6 in under a common 18 in gap. The Panasonic NN-CD87 adds up to 19.5 in (computed), so check your manual and never block the vents. The manual allows some layouts with one side flush to a wall.
How much space does it need behind it?
Panasonic's NN-CD87 manual asks for 4 in at the back. For most other models we haven't read a manual, so we can't give a verified number. A deep body plus rear space adds up fast on a typical 24 in counter. Measure from the wall to the counter edge and subtract what your manual asks for.
Can I put a combo inside a cabinet?
Not unless the manual says so. The UK edition of Ninja's MW101 guide says it should not be wall mounted or installed inside a cabinet. Panasonic's manual says wall-cabinet installation needs its proper trim kit where the oven is designed for it. A closed cabinet can block the air a combo needs.
Is clearance the same as a microwave on clearance sale?
No. On this page it means the air space around the appliance. A search for microwaves on clearance usually means store sales. We don't track sales or prices here. To choose a model that fits, go to our size guide and countertop comparison.
