Breville Combi Wave 3-in-1 Microwave: Watts, Size and Who It Suits
The Breville Combi Wave 3-in-1 (BMO870) is a true microwave air fryer combo in the premium price class. Buy it if you will use all three modes and have open space around it. Its microwave output is 1100 W, says a piece of Breville's US manual, not the 1700 W some listings quote. Measure first: it is deep, and it needs air.

The short version
Worth a look if you will really use the air fryer, convection oven and inverter microwave, and you have open counter. Microwave output is 1100 W per the manual excerpts, not 1700 W. It is 20.1 in deep, says Breville, and Breville's current book asks for 12 in above it and 8 in beside it, which rules out many spots under cabinets. Check your manual and never block the vents.

This is a well-equipped machine that asks a lot of your kitchen. Want one appliance for reheating, baking and crisping, with open air around it? It earns a look. If it has to sit under a cabinet, start somewhere else.

Is it right for me?
Why it works
- You want air fry, convection and inverter microwave in one box
- You like presets: Breville says 19, plus one-touch shortcuts
- You have open counter, without a wall cabinet right above the spot
- You want the Combi Crisp Pan and trivet in the box
Where it falls short
- The spot sits under a low wall cabinet
- Your counter is shallow: 20.1 in deep leaves little in front
- You mainly reheat and defrost, and a simpler model would do
- Crisping is your only goal and you have room for a basket fryer
What are the specs?
Two Breville sources give slightly different sizes, so we show both. Plan with the bigger one.

Is it 1700 W or 1100 W?
Some listings and an AI Overview say this model has 1700 W of microwave power. That doesn't match the manual excerpts. 1100 W is the output, the number you compare between microwaves, and 1200 W is what the microwave draws. None of the power-use figures in those excerpts reaches 1700 W. Our wattage guide explains input and output.
So what does 1100 W mean for you? It sits above the 1000 W of Toshiba's ML2-EC10SA and the 900 W of the small combos. Inverter control (better control at low power) helps with jobs like softening butter. It is not a promise of perfectly even heating.
Will it fit?
Breville's current instruction book (W25) asks for at least 12 in above the unit and 8 in between it and adjacent walls. An older copy hosted by a retailer says 8 in above, so plan with 12. The book also says it must not go in a cabinet or over a range or other heat source.
- Height: 12.6 in plus 12 in is 24.6 in (computed). That is more than a common 18 in gap, a figure we only have from secondary sources. Check your manual and never block the vents.
- Width: 20.5 in plus 8 in on each side is 36.5 in (computed), if there is a wall on both sides.
- Depth: 20.1 in on a typical 24 in counter leaves about 3.9 in in front (computed), before you open the door.
Other manuals ask for different numbers. Our clearance guide collects what we could read, and the size guide shows how to measure. The checker compares outside sizes only. It doesn't add Breville's space for you, so add that yourself.
Enter your space and we’ll show which models fit. We use the sizes each brand publishes. It also needs some air around it, so check the manual too.
Many kitchens have about 18 in here, but measure yours to be sure.

How is it day to day?
This is what the manual excerpts describe:
- Air fry: the screen asks you to insert the pan, and it preheats with the Combi Crisp Pan in the high position. You set 1 to 60 minutes and 400°F to 450°F.
- Fast Combi: it alternates microwave, convection and grill for gratins, baked dishes, vegetables and meat.
- From Frozen: for chicken, meat or fish, from 8 oz to 2 lb, with a stop to turn most food halfway.
- Metal and foil: no metal containers or utensils except the supplied accessories, and no foil over racks or any other part of the oven. Don't put plates or dishes on the Combi Crisp Pan.
- Cleaning: wipe the inside with a soft, damp cloth after each use. The manual warns that leftover food, grease or fat can make it overheat, so this isn't a once-a-month job.
- Power: a separate circuit is recommended, and no extension cord.

Quick questions
Does the Breville Combi Wave have 1700 watts of microwave power?
No. The specification table in the manual excerpts we read lists 1100 W of microwave output and 1200 W of microwave input. It also lists 1400 W of convection input and 1100 W of grill input. We didn't see 1700 W in those excerpts. If a listing says 1700 W microwave, don't use that number to compare it with other models.
Is the Breville Combi Wave a real air fryer?
It has an air fry function with preheating, a range of 400°F to 450°F and a Combi Crisp Pan that sits on the turntable, says the manual excerpt. That makes it a true combo. How its crisping compares with a basket air fryer is open. We found no controlled test of any combo against a basket fryer.
How much space does the Combi Wave need?
Breville says 20.5 × 20.1 × 12.6 in. Breville's current instruction book asks for at least 12 in above and 8 in from adjacent walls. That adds up to about 24.6 in of height and 36.5 in of width with a wall on each side (computed). The manual also says it must not go in a cabinet, so read it before you plan the spot.
Can the Combi Wave go above the stove?
No. The manual excerpts say not to install it over a range cooktop or other heat-producing appliance, and warn that doing so can damage the oven and void the warranty. If the only free spot is above your stove, you need an over-the-range model, which is a different appliance with a different installation.
Does the Combi Wave need its own circuit?
Breville recommends a separate circuit that serves only this microwave, and warns against running other appliances on it while it is in use, say the manual excerpts. If you aren't sure what shares your kitchen circuit, ask an electrician. The manual also says not to use an extension cord.
