Microwave Air Fryer Combo

Question & answer

Will a Microwave Air Fryer Fit Under My Cabinets?

Usually yes, if you choose a low body and your manual allows the gap. Countertop combos in our comparison run from 11.1 to 14.1 in tall, so most leave 4 to 7 in under a common 18 in gap. The catch is the top space your manual asks for. We could read it for only a few models, and it can use up all of that.

The short answer

Probably, if you pick a low model. Add the body height to the top space in your manual, then compare with your own measured gap. The Sharp SMC0985KS is 11.38 in tall, says Sharp, leaving about 6.6 in under a common 18 in gap. Panasonic's sister-model manual adds up to 19.5 in, so check your manual and never block the vents.

Two sums answer this: one for height and one for depth. Use your own tape measure, because the 18 in gap often quoted comes only from secondary sources and your kitchen may differ. Our clearance guide has the manual figures in full.

How do I do the height sum?

Measure from the counter to the underside of the cabinet, at the spot itself. Then add the body height and the top space from your manual.

The table shows what is left under an 18 in gap before that top space (computed). "No data" means we couldn't read a top figure in a manual, not that none is needed.

Three models ask for more top space than is left: the Breville at 24.6 in, the Panasonic at 19.5 in and, in its UK guide, the Ninja at about 25.9 in (all computed). That is a reason to read the manual, not proof that a model can't go there. Panasonic's manual allows one side flush to a wall if the other side or the top is free. Breville's current instruction book asks for at least 12 in above and says not to place the unit in a cabinet. Check your manual and never block the vents.

How do I do the depth sum?

Depth can be the real problem under cabinets. Measure from the wall to the counter edge. Then add the body and any front and back distance your manual gives.

Here is the one full example we could work out. Panasonic's NN-CD87 manual asks for 4 in at the back and at least 3 in between the door and the counter edge. A body 17.75 in deep plus those 7 in is 24.75 in (computed). That is more than a typical 24 in counter, before the door swings open. Our listing names the sister model NN-CV87QS, and those distances aren't confirmed for it, so read the manual that comes with your unit.

The shallow end looks easier. The BLACK+DECKER ES9P032NA is listed at 14.5 in deep, though a third-party summary says 15.55 in. The Sharp is 15.77 in deep, says Sharp. The Toshiba ML2-EC10SA is 18 in deep, says Toshiba, while its listing says 16.4 in. Plan with the bigger number.

Will it fit? Try your numbers

The checker compares stated outside sizes. It has no top-space figures for these low models, so leave extra room for what your manual asks.

Enter your space and we’ll show which models fit. We use the sizes each brand publishes. It also needs some air around it, so check the manual too.

Many kitchens have about 18 in here, but measure yours to be sure.

Enter all three measurements and the list appears here.

Which one should I start with?

Best for small kitchensAd

Sharp

Sharp SMC0985KS

The smallest footprint we could confirm on a company's own product sheet.

Why it fits here: Low at 11.38 in and shallow at 15.77 in, both on Sharp's own product sheet. Its top space isn't on the sheet, so read the manual before you commit.

The Sharp is the low body we can back with a brand's own figures. Our small kitchen combos page covers its trade-offs, including a 900 W microwave and a 10.6 in turntable. Want a full 1.0 cu ft? The Toshiba ML2-EC10SA* is only about 0.4 in taller. The Toshiba OptiChef Basic* and the Toshiba MASTER 6-in-1, which is renewed and not new*, are also low, with listing data only.

What else should I check?

  • The air. Panasonic's manual warns that air vents on the cabinet and door get hot during air fry, convection, combo and broil, and that blocked vents can make an oven overheat. On the Ninja, the UK guide places the exhaust vent at the rear.
  • The door. Watch for wall corners and handles in the swing. Our size guide shows how to measure.
  • The basket. A hot basket needs somewhere to land. Keep a clear stretch of counter near the handle side.
  • No cabinet spot at all? Our countertop comparison has models for open space too.
  • Not sure about one appliance? See whether combos are worth it.

Quick questions

What size fits under kitchen cabinets?

Height decides this more than size inside. The low bodies in our comparison are about 11 to 12 in tall, including several 0.9 cu ft models and the 1.0 cu ft Toshiba ML2-EC10SA. They leave about 6 to 7 in under a common 18 in gap. Measure your own gap, then add the top space from your model's manual.

How tall is too tall for an 18 in gap?

There is no single limit, because the top space differs by model. Panasonic's NN-CD87 manual asks for 6 in, which takes a 13.5 in body to 19.5 in (computed). That manual also allows one side flush to a wall if the other side or the top is free. Check your manual and never block the vents.

Can I push a combo all the way back under the cabinet?

Only if your manual allows it. Panasonic's NN-CD87 manual asks for 4 in at the back and 3 in between the door and the counter edge. On a 17.75 in deep body that adds up to 24.75 in (computed), more than a typical 24 in counter. Measure from the wall to the counter edge first.

Could the heat damage my cabinets?

It can if the air can't get out. The UK edition of Ninja's guide says peeling, warping or color changes on a cabinet above the microwave may come from the exhaust vent. It tells you to stop using it and contact support. Panasonic warns that the air vents get hot during air fry and that blocked vents can cause overheating.
