Microwave Air Fryer vs Basket Air Fryer: Which One Should You Buy?
Buy a combo to save counter space. Buy a basket fryer if you keep your microwave and crisping comes first. Nobody has published a controlled test of a microwave air fryer against a basket air fryer, so nobody can honestly say which crisps better. Good Housekeeping reports crisp wings from its selected combos, without numbers.

The short version
We found no controlled comparison. Good Housekeeping got crisp, golden wings from its selected combos but published no scores and no basket comparison. A combo gives you a microwave and larger dishes in one box. A basket fryer usually costs less and leaves your microwave free. If you own a good microwave, add a basket fryer. Replacing it anyway? Consider a combo.

We looked for a controlled comparison and didn't find one. So this page gives you what is known, labels what is only plausible, and helps you decide anyway. For the wider question, see whether combos are worth it.
How do they compare?
| Point | Microwave air fryer combo | Basket air fryer |
|---|---|---|
| Microwaving | Yes | No |
| Soup, liquids, defrosting | Yes, in microwave mode | Not its job, per Whirlpool |
| Size inside | About 0.9 to 1.5 cu ft in our comparison | 5 to 6.5 qt in the models below |
| Dish shape | Check your dish against the turntable or flatbed | Limited by the basket |
| Counter | One footprint, replacing two | A second appliance beside your microwave |
| Cleanup | Can get messier, per Good Housekeeping | Basket and tray |
| Price class | Budget to premium | Budget to mid-range |
| Crisping | Crisp wings reported, no numbers | No controlled comparison with combos found |
Which one crisps better?
Air frying is hot air from a heater and a fast fan. A combo blows that air around a larger space, while a basket fryer works in a small one. So it is plausible that a basket fryer has an edge on crisping. But plausible is not measured, and we found no measurement.
Good Housekeeping says an air fry setting typically uses a larger, faster fan than convection. So a named air fry mode matters more than a convection label.
Good Housekeeping's lab checked nine combos and air-fried wings in them. It says its selected models delivered crisp, golden wings, that some perform exceptionally well, and that performance varies widely. It gives no scores and doesn't compare with a basket fryer.
Which is faster?
We found no controlled data. Whirlpool says air fryers can take a bit longer than microwaves to cook and reheat, but they deliver a crunchy exterior. Ninja claims full meals up to 60% faster than a conventional oven, which says nothing about a basket fryer. A combo does one job at a time, while two appliances can both run.
Two tips that apply to both: wet batter tends to drip, so use a dry coating, and follow your manual on racks and foil. If a combo's air fry comes out soft, see why air fry is not crispy.
When should I take the combo?
- Counter space is the reason you're shopping.
- Your old microwave needs replacing anyway.
- You cook larger dishes or softer foods that don't suit a basket.
- You accept that crisping results are less documented than you might like.

Quick questions
Does a microwave air fryer combo air-fry as well as a basket air fryer?
Nobody knows from controlled data. Good Housekeeping reports crisp, golden wings from its selected combos and says performance varies widely, but it publishes no scores and no comparison with basket fryers. We wouldn't say a combo is as crispy as a basket fryer, and we wouldn't say it is always worse.
Does a higher air fry wattage mean crispier food?
Not on its own. Ninja's frozen-to-crispy footnote for the MW101 rests on air fry wattage, 1700 W versus 1500 W on the FN101. That is a wattage comparison, not a cooking test. We found no published data that links watts to crispness.
Is a combo bigger inside than a basket air fryer?
Usually, but the numbers don't line up, since combos are stated in cubic feet and basket fryers in quarts. Sharp notes that the actual room for food is less than the stated size.
Why do AI answers disagree on this?
Because they are filling a gap. When we asked, one assistant said a combo air-fries nearly as well, and another said usually not quite. Neither pointed to a controlled comparison, and we couldn't find one either. Treat any confident answer with care.
