Installing an Over-the-Range Microwave With Air Fry: Height, Venting and When to Hire Help

Hire an installer if you need new wiring or ductwork. A straight swap is a job for two people. You fix a mounting plate to the wall, drill through the upper cabinet, set up the vent and lift a heavy unit into place. GE gives 66 in from the floor to the bottom of the cabinet above, and a 30 in wide opening.

The short version

A direct swap in a 30 in opening with a working outlet in the cabinet above and a matching vent is the simple case. GE gives 66 in from floor to cabinet bottom. LG says it takes two people and needs at least one wall stud. Hire a qualified installer or electrician if you need a new outlet, new duct or cut openings. Follow the instructions packed with your model.

This page helps you judge the job. It does not replace the instructions packed with your unit. We read GE documents and one LG manual for a model without air fry. An air fry mode doesn't change the mounting basics in those documents. For the buying side, see over-the-range microwaves.

Is it a swap or a new installation?

GE says its 30 in models fit a 30 in wide opening, with a cabinet depth of 12 to 13 in. For a 36 in opening, GE sells filler kits. See over-the-range dimensions before you order.

What does the job involve?

  1. Check the opening and the outlet

Confirm the width, the height above the cooktop, the cabinet depth and a grounded outlet in the cabinet above, on a dedicated circuit. If the outlet is missing, have a qualified electrician install it.
  2. Choose the vent path

Pick roof, wall or recirculating venting according to your manual, and add up the duct length (see below). Never vent into a wall cavity, an attic or an unused area.
  3. Prepare the blower

Unplug the unit and set the blower for your vent path. LG ships its unit set up for roof venting. Its manual warns that a wrongly fitted vent fan can cause overheating or fire.
  4. Mark the wall and the cabinet

Protect the counter or cooktop, and turn off power to any affected circuits. Find a stud and tape up the templates that come with the unit.
  5. Drill and fix the mounting plate

Drill the holes the template marks, and cut any vent opening. LG asks for at least one lag screw into a wall stud, plus toggle bolts into the drywall.
  6. Lift and bolt the unit

With two people, hang the unit on the plate, thread the cord up into the cabinet, tilt it up and bolt it through the cabinet bottom. LG says the cabinet and wall must support 150 lb plus what they hold.
  7. Connect the duct, fit the filters and test

Connect and seal the duct, fit the filters, plug in the unit and check the door, fan and light as your manual describes.

Brick or masonry walls call for special hardware. We found no company figure for how long the job takes, so we give none.

How long can the duct be?

An over-the-range unit is also your hood. GE and LG both set a limit of 140 equivalent feet for the whole system. Fittings count for more than they seem. LG's example with a 3 1/4 × 10 in duct:

PartEquivalent length
One 90° elbow25 ft
One wall cap40 ft
8 ft of straight duct8 ft
Total73 ft

LG adds not to use two elbows together, to use no more than three 90° elbows and to keep the run short. Ductwork is not included. GE's sheet warns that a rear exhaust must line up with the space between the wall studs. If yours doesn't, that is a job for a professional.

What about power and gas?

GE says these models should always be on a dedicated circuit: 120 V, grounded, on a 15 or 20 amp breaker or time-delay fuse. LG also asks for a dedicated supply, with the outlet in the cabinet above, and says not to use an extension cord. Our page on circuits and amps has the background, and a qualified electrician should handle any changes.

Above a gas cooktop, GE says these units are not recommended if the combined burner rating is over about 65,000 BTU.

Where should I buy it?

Many people buy from Home Depot, Lowe's or a local dealer, partly because installation can be arranged at the same time. Ask what is included, and whether old-unit removal is covered. If this looks like too much work, compare a counter model on over-the-range versus countertop. The best over-the-range models page lists what we know about specific units.

GE Profile PVM9179SRSS

A 1.7 cu ft over-the-range unit with air fry that GE says is no longer being made.

Seller data only: We only have the Amazon listing for this product. We list it as an option, not as a recommendation.

Why it fits here: GE's documents for the PVM9179 family are among the clearest we read on height, duct and filler kits, but GE's page says the PVM9179SRSS is no longer being manufactured, so ask about stock, condition and warranty. Our price lookup returned nothing for this listing, so check availability, or compare with a dealer.

Best for: a like-for-like swap, once the seller confirms stock, condition and warranty

Quick questions

How high should an over-the-range microwave be installed?

GE says 66 in from the floor to the bottom of the cabinet above, which is 30 in from the cooktop to that cabinet. GE's PVM9179 sheet adds at least 2 in between the bottom of the microwave and the top of a range backguard. LG's warning label says at least 13 3/4 in above the cooktop. Your model's instructions set the actual figure.

Can I install an over-the-range microwave myself?

Some people do, especially when replacing a similar unit. GE's product sheet says no extra wiring, venting or cabinet rebuilding is needed in many cases. LG recommends a qualified installer, and says not to go ahead if you can't find a wall stud. New wiring or a new duct is a job for a professional.

Can I reuse the old mounting bracket?

GE says no. Use the bracket that comes with the new microwave, because it is specific to each model. Use the new screws, bolts and exhaust adapter too. Check the instructions for other brands.

Does an over-the-range microwave need to be vented outside?

Not always. GE's PVM9179 and LG's manual allow three paths: outside through the wall, outside through the roof, or recirculating through a charcoal filter back into the room. Recirculating is simpler but doesn't take air out of the kitchen. Never vent into a wall cavity, an attic or an unused area.

Can I install one under a cabinet with no stove below it?

GE says it can, as long as the height clearances still apply. But it can't be used on a counter or shelf. GE also says not to install it in a closed cabinet or a cut-out space where the bottom is covered.
