Over-the-Range Microwave Dimensions: Width, Depth, Height and 12-Inch Cabinets
Plan for a microwave about 30 in wide, 16.4 to 17.25 in tall and 14.75 to 17.3 in deep. Measure your opening, not your old microwave. We found no 12 in deep model, so a 12 in cabinet is a mounting rule, not the size of the microwave.

The short version
Plan for a 30 in wide opening, about 16.5 to 17 in of height and about 15.5 to 17.3 in of depth as stated. A 12 in deep model does not appear among the units we checked; the shallowest listing says 13.9 in. Installation sheets expect a cabinet about 12 in deep, up to 13 in, with its bottom 66 in above the floor.
Depth changes by more than 2 in depending on whether the brand counts the door, and documents from the same brand can disagree. For the basics, see our over-the-range buying guide.
What are the usual sizes?
| Measure | What we found | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 29.875 to 30 in | Fits a 30 in opening with little to spare |
| Height | 16.4 to 17.25 in | Sets the space left above your cooktop |
| Depth as stated | 15.6 to 17.3 in, often without saying if the door counts | What sticks out into the kitchen |
| Door open 90° | 45 in on the one model that states it | How far you must be able to stand back |
| Size inside | 1.5 to 1.9 cu ft | Tall, deep units tend to hold more |
What are the sizes model by model?
These are not recommendations. The best over-the-range page compares the Amazon options. GE says the Profile below is no longer made, so ask any seller about stock, condition and warranty.
| Model | Width | Height | Depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool WMH78519L | 30 in | 17.1 in | 14 3/4 in without door; 17 5/16 in with door |
| LG MHEC1737F* | 29 7/8 in | 16 7/16 in | 15 11/16 in |
| LG MHEC1737 builder sheet, 2022 | 29 7/8 in | 16 1/2 in | 16 3/8 in |
| GE Profile PVM9179SRSS* | 29 7/8 in | 16.5 in per GE | 15.56 in |
| BLACK+DECKER EC942K6CE-SS* | 29.9 in | 16.4 in | 13.9 in (listing only) |
| Frigidaire Professional 1.9 cu ft* | 30 in | 17.25 in | 16.5 in (listing only) |
LG's current page and its older sheet differ by about 0.7 in of depth, and we don't know why. Whirlpool's guide shows the door alone can add about 2.6 in. The BLACK+DECKER's 13.9 in is a seller's figure, and another listing showed a larger one, so ask the seller what it includes.
Does a 12-inch cabinet mean a 12-inch microwave?
No. A 12 in figure usually describes the upper cabinet, not the microwave.
- A Lowe's-hosted installation sheet says its unit is designed for standard 12 in wall cabinets, with a maximum of 13 in. We couldn't tie it to a brand.
- LG's builder sheet gives a maximum cabinet depth of 13 in, and a 30 × 13 in cut-out.
- Frigidaire's FMOS1746BB instructions also say 13 in. A deeper cabinet means spacing the unit out from the wall.
So the body hangs past the cabinet front. Under a 12 in cabinet, Whirlpool's 14 3/4 in body sticks out about 2.75 in, and 5.3 in with the door. The GE Profile's 15.56 in sticks out about 3.6 in.
How much room is left above the stove?
GE says the bottom of the cabinet should be 66 in from the floor and 30 in from the cooktop. Subtract the unit's height:
| Unit height | Space left | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 16.4 in | 13.6 in | BLACK+DECKER, as listed |
| 16 1/2 in | 13.5 in | LG builder sheet; GE Profile per GE |
| 17.1 in | 12.9 in | Whirlpool WMH78519L |
| 17.25 in | 12.75 in | Frigidaire, as listed |
Your own instructions may set a minimum. Measure your largest pot before you decide.
How do I measure?
Measure the opening
Measure between the cabinets at the top, middle and bottom. LG and Frigidaire ask for 30 in. Use the narrowest figure.Measure the height
Measure from the cooktop to the bottom of the cabinet, and from the floor to the same point. GE works with 30 in and 66 in.Measure the cabinet depth
Measure from the wall to the front of the cabinet, doors included. Look for a recessed bottom or front trim too.Check the door swing
Whirlpool's door needs 45 in from the wall when open at 90 degrees. Check the hinge side as well: GE asks for 1/2 in, and Frigidaire asks for 1.25 in to an adjacent wall.Compare with your model's guide
Get the dimension guide for the exact model number. If it doesn't match your numbers, ask a dealer before you order.
What about the inside?
Outer size tells you little about the inside. Whirlpool's 1.9 cu ft model has a 21.1 × 14 in floor and a 14 3/16 in turntable. LG's 1.7 cu ft page gives 21 10/16 × 14 4/16 in. Both are far wider than a countertop combo, which our size guide compares. If you want to air-fry on a tray, that width is the real gain.
Next step: if the numbers work, read the over-the-range buying guide. If not, look at a countertop model on our start page.
Quick questions
Is there a 12 inch deep over-the-range microwave?
We didn't find one. The shallowest figure we found is a 13.9 in listing for a BLACK+DECKER model, and we couldn't confirm it. Whirlpool's dimension guide shows 14.75 in without the door. The 12 in you may have heard is usually the wall cabinet depth.
What is the standard over-the-range microwave size?
We found no official standard, but the format is fairly fixed. Models we read are about 29.9 to 30 in wide, 16.4 to 17.25 in tall and 15.6 to 17.3 in deep. The sheets we read ask for an opening of at least 30 in. Check the dimension guide for your exact model before you cut anything.
How much clearance do I need above the stove?
GE says the bottom of the cabinet above should be 66 in from the floor and 30 in from the cooktop. Subtract the unit's height to get the space left: a 16.5 in unit leaves about 13.5 in. Other brands can differ, so read your model's instructions.
Can I fit an over-the-range microwave under a deeper cabinet?
Sometimes, with spacing. Frigidaire's FMOS1746BB instructions say that if the cabinet depth, doors included, is over 13 in, the unit must be spaced out from the wall so air can reach its top vent. LG lists a 13 in maximum. Ask an installer if your cabinets are deeper.
Will a 30 inch over-the-range microwave fit a 30 inch opening?
Usually, but there is little to spare. LG's builder sheet asks for at least 30 in. GE asks for 1/2 in on the hinge side so the door can open, and Frigidaire asks for 1.25 in from the hinge side to an adjacent wall. Measure at several heights, since walls are rarely straight.
