Question & answer
What Size Microwave Air Fryer for a Family of Five?
Look at the biggest tray you can fit, not a servings claim. We found no reliable figure for servings per cubic foot. For five people, start with 1.5 cu ft and a 13.6 in turntable if your counter is deep enough, and expect to cook crisp food in batches.

The short answer
We found no reliable servings-per-cubic-foot figure, so choose by tray. For five, start with the biggest turntable here: Toshiba's 1.5 cu ft ML-EC42P at 13.6 in. That is only about 20% more tray area than a 12.4 in turntable (computed). Air frying works best in a single layer, so expect batches, and check that your counter is deep enough.

You may see answers that turn cubic feet into a number of servings. We couldn't trace such a figure to a brand or a measurement, so we won't give one. Here is what you can check yourself. Our guide to large family combos covers the wider buying decision.
Why do cubic feet mislead?
Cubic feet describe the inside, and Sharp's product sheet says real food space is less than the stated figure. Height inside does little for air frying, because food goes in flat. Panasonic's manual says to place food in a single layer with space between pieces. Breville's says to lay it flat in a single layer. So the tray decides how much you cook at once.
Going from 1.0 to 1.5 cu ft adds 50% to the stated size, but only about 20% to the tray area.
| Model | Stated size | Turntable | Tray area (computed) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toshiba ML-EC42P* | 1.5 cu ft | 13.6 in | About 145 sq in |
| Toshiba ML2-EC10SA | 1.0 cu ft | 12.4 in | About 121 sq in |
| Sharp SMC0985KS | 0.9 cu ft | 10.6 in | About 88 sq in |
The area is simple circle math on the stated turntable. The basket or pan that comes with a model can be smaller. Toshiba's page gives no basket size, so check the listing or manual.
Which pans fit on the turntable?
A pan sweeps a circle as it turns, so its diagonal counts, not just its width. This is our math, without handles, which add more. A pan can overhang a little if the inside allows it, but don't plan on that, because it may catch.
| Pan | Diagonal (computed) | Fits 10.6 in | Fits 12.4 in | Fits 13.6 in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 × 8 in square | 11.3 in | No | Yes | Yes |
| 9 × 9 in square | 12.7 in | No | No | Yes |
| 12 in round pizza | 12 in | No | Yes | Yes |
| 9 × 13 in rectangle | 15.8 in | No | No | No |
If dinner is a 9 × 13 in casserole, its diagonal is wider than every turntable here, so your oven stays in the picture. A flatbed model has no turntable, but check the inside size. Ninja says the flat tray in its MW101 gives 40% more usable surface than a 0.9 cu ft turntable microwave, and that it makes meals for eight to 10 people easy. That is Ninja's claim, and a different Ninja text uses 1.1 cu ft as the baseline.
Will it fit my counter?
Bigger bodies are where family buyers get caught out.
| Model | Size | Depth | Height | Size comes from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toshiba ML-EC42P | 1.5 cu ft | 21.38 in | 12.87 in | Toshiba |
| Toshiba OptiChef PRO MAX* | 1.3 cu ft | 17.8 in | 12.8 in | Listing only |
| Panasonic HomeChef 4-in-1* | 1.2 cu ft | 17.75 in | 13.52 in | Sister model and retailer |
On a typical 24 in counter, 21.38 in leaves about 2.6 in (computed), before any space your manual asks for at the back. Measure from the wall to the counter edge first. If that is too tight, the PRO MAX is shallower, but we only have its listing, and it states no turntable size in our data.
The Panasonic is 13.5 in tall, and its sister model's manual asks for 6 in on top, which is 19.5 in (computed). That is more than a common 18 in gap. Check your manual and never block the vents. Our clearance guide and size guide have the details.
What should I buy for five?
Start with the biggest tray your counter can take, then plan dinners around one job at a time.
Toshiba
Toshiba ML-EC42P 1.5 cu ft

- 1000 W microwave with an auto moisture and heat sensor
- 12.87 in tall, says Toshiba, still under a common 18 in gap
- 21.38 in deep, says Toshiba, which leaves little counter free
- 21.77 in wide, so it needs a real slot of counter
- Space it needs not confirmed from a manual we read
Air-frying for all five at once gets old fast. A basket air fryer beside your microwave can be the better setup, since both can run together. Combo versus basket air fryer sets out the choice, and are combos worth it? covers the trade-offs.
Quick questions
Is 1.5 cu ft big enough for five people?
For reheating plates and bowls, usually yes, one or two at a time. For air frying a full dinner, the tray matters, not the cubic feet. A 13.6 in round tray is about 145 sq in (computed). Manuals advise a single layer, so plan on batches of fries or wings for five.
Do I need a second appliance for five people?
Not for most jobs, but it helps if you often air-fry for everyone at once. A combo runs one job at a time unless a combination mode fits your food. A basket air fryer beside it lets two things cook together, if you have the counter.
Will a 9 x 13 pan fit?
Don't count on it with a turntable here. A 9 x 13 in pan has a diagonal of about 15.8 in (computed), and the biggest turntable here is 13.6 in, so it is unlikely to turn freely. Flat-tray models have no turntable, but check the inside size, not the outside, before you plan around that pan.
