Flatbed Microwave Air Fryer: No Turntable, What You Gain

The Ninja Crispi Microwave MW101 is the only flatbed microwave air fryer we could confirm. With no turntable, a wide dish does not have to spin. Buy it if you want that and have room above it. Air frying is different: food goes in a 5.5 qt glass basket, so the flat floor helps less there.

The short version

Buy the Ninja Crispi MW101 if you want a flatbed: no turntable, a flat floor for wide microwave dishes and a 5.5 qt glass basket for air frying. It is about 14.1 in tall as listed and needs room above. Under low cabinets, a turntable combo like the Toshiba ML2-EC10SA is the safer buy.

What is on this page

Flatbed means no spinning plate, so the whole floor is usable. It is easy to oversell, so here is what the flat floor changes and what it doesn't.

Why do people want one?

A square dish needs a circle as wide as its diagonal to turn freely. The sums below are ours and ignore handles.

  • An 8 × 8 in pan (about 11.3 in across) spins on the Toshiba 12.4 in and 13.6 in plates, not on the Sharp's 10.6 in.
  • A 9 × 9 in pan (about 12.7 in) spins only on the 13.6 in plate.
  • A 9 × 13 in pan (about 15.8 in) spins on none of them.

That is the case for a flatbed: nothing has to turn. It doesn't prove a given pan fits an MW101, because we could not read its floor size. Panasonic's manual warns that on turntable models, a dish that touches the walls stops the tray. Measure your favorite dish first.

What does Ninja claim?

Ninja's release says the flatbed gives 40% more usable surface versus a 0.9 cu ft turntable microwave. Another Ninja text names 1.1 cu ft as the comparison. So it is a comparison with a small turntable, not with every combo. Ninja gives no floor size that we could read. Ninja also speaks of meals for eight to 10 people. We found no independent check.

Where does the flat floor help?

This comes from the UK edition of the guide, the only one we could read. US and UK versions differ, so check your own booklet.

  • Microwaving. Popcorn, potatoes and soup go in the center of the floor, larger roasts on the bottom. This is where a flatbed earns its name.
  • Air frying. The glass basket sits on the top rails, and the guide says to use the glass dish rather than a sheet pan. Your batch is limited by the 5.5 qt basket, not the floor.
  • Baking. The guide says using the dish on the floor may undercook food.
  • Metal. The guide says no metal pans or foil in microwave, air fry or bake modes unless labeled microwave-safe. Rules differ by model. See metal and foil.

What do I give up?

  • The turning plate. We found no measurement of how a flatbed compares. Stir and turn food partway through.
  • A low body. The MW101 is about 14.1 in tall as listed, the tallest countertop body here. The UK guide asks for 11.81 in above it. See the clearance guide.
  • A lower price class. It is premium. The Toshibas are mid-range.

Which model should I pick?

Ninja Crispi MW101. The silver MW101 has a 1000 W microwave as listed and 1700 W for air fry, says Ninja. That 1700 W is about 14.2 A (computed), close to the limit of a 15 A circuit. It is the only Crispi that microwaves. The others are glass air fryers. See the Ninja Crispi Microwave page.

MW101 in black. The MW101BK1 in black* is the same family per the listing, with the same height and clearance questions.

Toshiba ML2-EC10SA. At 11.8 in tall, the ML2-EC10SA* leaves far more room under a cabinet. Toshiba says 18 in deep and Amazon says 16.4 in, so plan for the bigger one.

Toshiba ML-EC42P. For more room for wide food, the ML-EC42P* has 1.5 cu ft and a 13.6 in plate. It is 21.38 in deep per Toshiba.

What should I check before buying?

Enter your space and we’ll show which models fit. We use the sizes each brand publishes. It also needs some air around it, so check the manual too.

Many kitchens have about 18 in here, but measure yours to be sure.

Enter all three measurements and the list appears here.

Which combo is yours?

Question 1

Where will it go?

This decides how you buy.

Buy the Ninja Crispi MW101* if a flatbed is why you are shopping and you have headroom. If it has to sit under a cabinet, a low turntable model is better. See countertop combos.

Quick questions

Is there a microwave air fryer without a turntable?

Yes. The Ninja Crispi Microwave MW101 has a flatbed instead of a turntable. It is the only countertop combo we could confirm as flatbed. Plain flatbed microwaves exist, but the ones we saw have no air fry mode.

Do flatbed microwaves heat as evenly as turntable models?

We found no controlled comparison, so we cannot say. Good Housekeeping says turntables rotate food to help it heat evenly, and a flatbed gives that up. Stir and turn food partway through, and let thick food stand.

What size pan fits in a flatbed microwave air fryer?

We could not read the MW101's inner floor size, so we cannot promise one. For air frying, its guide uses a 5.5 qt glass basket and says a sheet pan cannot replace the glass dish. Measure your dish against the inside before you buy.

Is a flatbed microwave easier to clean?

It has two fewer parts: no glass tray to lift out and no roller ring beneath it. The walls, heater and door still need wiping. We found no measured cleaning comparison.
