Whirlpool Microwave With Air Fry: Basket, Presets and Who Should Buy

Buy the Whirlpool WMH78519LZ if you are replacing the microwave above your stove. Skip it if you want a plug-in. It is a 1.9 cu ft over-the-range unit that replaces your hood. A dealer lists it at 1200 W, and Whirlpool sells a folding basket for it. For a countertop combo, we recommend the Toshiba ML2-EC10SA.

The short version

The Whirlpool WMH78519LZ is a 1.9 cu ft over-the-range microwave with Air Fry mode, listed by a dealer at 1200 W and 400 CFM. It uses a folding air fry basket on the turntable. Whirlpool suggests 400°F for fresh vegetables, 425°F for fresh meat and 450°F for frozen food. It needs installing, so ask a dealer.

What is on this page

Search for Whirlpool and a microwave air fryer combo and you mostly find a microwave that hangs above the stove and doubles as a range hood. Whirlpool's own product pages wouldn't load for us, so the specs below come from a dealer's page. Its help pages and parts store loaded fine.

What is the Whirlpool model?

ItemWMH78519LZ, per Abt
TypeOver-the-range microwave with Air Fry mode
Size inside1.9 cu ft
Microwave power1200 W
Vent fan400 CFM, 6 speeds
Outside size29.94 × 16.56 × 17.13 in (W × D × H)

The WMH78519 comes in several versions, so check the full model number. A bigger number on a listing may measure something else, as our wattage guide explains.

What about the basket and temperatures?

Air fry here relies on a basket that sits on the turntable. Whirlpool's parts store lists the W11646743 for models WMH78519LB, LV, LW and LZ. The part showed as temporarily out of stock when we read the page. Don't assume it fits other models. Our accessories guide explains how to check.

Whirlpool's help page has a few handling rules:

  • Open the basket's folding feet, then center it on the turntable.
  • Turn the turntable by hand to check the basket doesn't touch the wall.
  • Use mitts, and don't hold the basket by its feet, because it can tip.
  • For juicy meats, put a microwave-safe dish under the basket to catch drips.
Food typeTemperature
Fresh vegetables, such as cauliflower and broccoli400°F
Fresh meat, such as wings and chicken breasts425°F
Frozen food, potato wedges and breaded items450°F

These apply to the over-the-range mode on Whirlpool's help page. The presets cook in one layer and prompt you to flip. The countertop page in the same help section differs. It lists a manual mode at 400°F and its own presets, and says to go by the sticker inside your microwave or the manual.

Is it right for me?

Why it works

  • Combines microwave, vent and air fry above the stove
  • Clear steps and temperatures on Whirlpool's help site
  • Basket part number published with its model list

Where it falls short

  • Fixed installation, not a plug-in appliance
  • We could not read Whirlpool's product pages or manual
  • No air fry results we can point to, and no controlled comparison with a basket fryer

Buy it if you are replacing an over-the-range unit and want air fry without using the counter. Check your opening and venting first, and use a qualified installer for any wiring or venting change. Our over-the-range guide covers fit, and our installation guide covers the job. Many people buy these at Home Depot, Lowe's or an appliance dealer. We don't link a Whirlpool listing on Amazon, because none was confirmed.

Skip it if you rent, want to keep a separate hood, or only want to try air frying. A countertop combo is simpler.

Quick questions

How do I use air fry on a Whirlpool microwave?

On over-the-range models, Whirlpool's help page says to touch Air Fry, set the weight or servings and confirm. Put in the basket and food when prompted, press Start, and turn the food when prompted. Open the basket's folding feet first, and check it doesn't touch the wall when the turntable turns.

Does the Whirlpool microwave come with an air fry basket?

The dealer page we read for the WMH78519LZ doesn't list what is in the box, so confirm it with your seller. Whirlpool sells a replacement basket, W11646743, for WMH78519LB, LV, LW and LZ models. It is dishwasher safe and foldable.

Does Whirlpool make a countertop microwave with air fry?

Whirlpool's help site has an air fry page for countertop microwaves. It names no models, and we could not open Whirlpool's product pages, so we can't name one. Check the sticker inside the microwave or the manual for your model.

What can I air-fry in a Whirlpool microwave?

Whirlpool's help page lists frozen fries and nuggets, wings, roasted potatoes, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower bites, zucchini chips and fresh chicken breast, each in one layer. It also advises avoiding wet batter and using a dry coating instead.
